While we will always try to use rescue dogs as much as possible, we have been unable to keep up with the needs of our applicants by only using rescue dogs. This is due to the volume of applications we receive as well as the specific needs of applicants, such as those needing hypoallergenic or extra large dogs for mobility assistance. Because of this, we have begun the process of planning to breed our own dogs.
The Service Dog Connection will be breeding only dogs that are genetically tested, OFA/PennHIP cleared, and of sound temperament. We will breed Golden Retrievers, English Labradors, Standard Poodles, Newfoundlands, and mixes of those breeds.
Our plan (at least initially) is for our program to keep 2-4 puppies out of each litter just depending on how many available puppy raisers we have at the time, and to adopt out the rest to loving homes. For those wanting to adopt our puppies, priority will be given to working-dog homes, such as those wanting to use their puppy for service or therapy dog work in the future. Breeding will start in 2021.
